Choosing the primary category on a Google Business Profile

Why Your Google Business Profile Is Not Bringing In Calls

By Mary Deanne Tabios, Done by Di. Phoenix, Arizona. Updated September 2026.

A Google Business Profile stops bringing in calls for four reasons: the wrong primary category, missing or stale photos, no recent reviews, and a service area that does not match where you actually work. Fixing the category alone often changes who sees you.

Short version

  • Your primary category decides which searches you are even eligible for.
  • Profiles with recent photos get looked at longer.
  • Reviews from six months ago do not carry the weight you think.
  • A phone number that differs by one character across the web works against you.
  • Being visible is not the same as being called. Check both.

Start with the primary category

Google uses your primary category to decide which searches your profile can appear in at all. Everything else is secondary to this.

Many owners pick the category that sounds most impressive rather than the one people search. A cleaning company listed under Commercial Cleaning Service will not show for house cleaning searches. Same business, different pool.

Open your profile, look at the primary category, then search the phrase you actually want to be found for. If the businesses ranking are in a different category than yours, that is your answer.

Profile insights showing views compared with calls

Check the four things in order

What to check What good looks like
Primary category Matches the exact phrase customers type
Photos Real photos of your work, added in the last month
Reviews A steady trickle, not a burst a year ago
Name, address, phone Identical everywhere online, down to the punctuation

Visible and not called is a different problem

Your profile has an insights section. It separates how many people saw you from how many people acted.

If views are low, that is a visibility problem and the category is usually the cause. If views are fine but calls are low, people are seeing you and choosing someone else. That is a photos and reviews problem.

The two need different fixes. Look before you start changing things.

The reviews part people avoid

Most owners do not ask. They hope a happy customer thinks of it on their own, and almost nobody does.

  1. Ask at the moment the customer is happiest, which is usually right when the job is finished.
  2. Send the direct review link by text within the hour. Do not make them search for you.
  3. Reply to every review, including the short ones.
  4. Reply to bad ones calmly and in public. People read the reply more closely than the complaint.

Common questions

How often should I post on my profile?

Something once or twice a month is enough. A quiet profile looks closed.

Can I change my category without losing rankings?

Yes, and if the current one is wrong you are not losing much. Change it and watch insights for a few weeks.

Do keywords in my business name help?

Do not add words that are not in your real registered name. Profiles get suspended for it.

Does this affect AI search too?

Yes. AI tools lean on the same profile data, so a clean profile helps in both places.
