Getting Cited by ChatGPT and Perplexity: A Practical Starting Point
Getting found on Google is table stakes now. Getting cited by name inside ChatGPT and Perplexity when someone asks a relevant question is the newer, less understood advantage, and most Arizona small businesses haven't touched it yet.
Being cited means the AI tool names your business specifically in its answer, not just a general reference to "local providers" or "companies in the area." That's the difference between being part of the AI's answer and being the answer.
The starting point is simple, even if most businesses skip it: ask the AI tools the questions your customers would actually ask. Open ChatGPT or Perplexity and type in a real question a customer in your service area might ask. See who gets named. If it's not you, that's the gap.
From there, the work is about specificity and structure, not volume. AI tools cite sources that give a clear, direct answer to a specific question, backed by information that's easy to verify: service area, what exactly you do, and why you're a credible answer to that particular question. A page that tries to be everything to everyone rarely gets cited. A page built around one clear question and a clear answer often does.
This isn't a one-time fix. AI tools re-crawl and re-evaluate sources on an ongoing basis, which means visibility here isn't something you build once and forget. It's closer to an ongoing practice than a project with an end date.
The businesses that start now, while most of their competitors haven't checked what AI tools say about them yet, have the clearest opening to become the name that gets cited. That window narrows every month more businesses catch on.
